Setting Sail

Today I read about a story called Setting Sail. I read the story as an activity for the Summer Learning Journey. I read the story of the first people to come to New Zealand. They were really brave people and were the first people to come to New Zealand. They were brave because they left their original homes and traveled to New Zealand.

If I would leave my home and travel to a different country I would be very nervous and scared. I might lose my way and never make it back home.

  1. Hi Aden!

This is a nice letter about your experience travelling to New Zealand for the first time. I agree, it would be a scary time, especially if you were going by yourself. Who is your letter written to?

Keep up the great work Aden!

    Nicky :)

  2. Kia Ora Aden,

Cadence here from the Summer Learning Journey team!
Ka pai Aden for putting yourself in the traveller’s shoes, it helps you understand what they went through. Could you tell us a little bit more? Maybe explain what exactly would make you scared and nervous?

For example: I would be scared about the storms and sharks you might encounter. That would make me very nervous!

When I was younger, I had to move from Wellington to Auckland. I was so scared at first because Auckland is such a big city with so many new things I had to get used to. I was also very nervous starting my new school! But now, I look back and see how much I learnt along the way and I feel grateful for all the new people I got to meet too.
Maybe you have experienced something similar?

I can’t wait to read more of your fantastic SLJ posts! Feel free to ask any questions if you need.

    Cadence 😊

  3. Hi Aden
Great job on completing this activity, I like how you said what the first explorers had to do. I have a question though, how do you think they felt when they first set off?

  4. Hello Aden
Great job on finishing this summer learning journey activity. I would also probably not want to leave my homeland. It would be very scary going somewhere new for the first time. Keep up the awesome work.
