To identify the main ideas in a text

I learned about what happened in the history of New Zealand way back in the 1800s, then the 1900s. There was many interesting things that happened back in years. Back in the years female were not able to vote for other countries as they had to stay home doing the normal things they would usually do. Like cleaning the house, looking after their children, and doing the dishes.  

I learned by skimming and scanning, and looking for information inside the texts. We didn’t copy everything the information said because then that will mean we are stealing what was written there. Instead of copying each word we made up our own words so it won’t be like we are stealing information. Then we had to write down all the ideas we got on the butchers paper. For the last five minutes that was left we had to think of a question that we wanted to know the answer to. Like: “Why did maori need a king?” “Why wasn’t females able to vote?” “Why was every male that was 21 years old or more only allowed to vote?”
